Trade Barriers Threaten Alberta’s Forestry Industry

OUR IMPACT

Alberta’s forestry industry is the backbone of many rural communities:

Major employer: 30,000+ direct jobs, plus thousands more in manufacturing, construction, and transportation.

Global exporter: 50% of Alberta’s forest products are exported—mainly to the U.S.

Sustainable industry: Investing in reforestation, innovation, and bioenergy solutions.

But increasing trade barriers threaten our ability to compete.

TRADE BARRIERS

Canada’s forestry sector faces up to 55% in taxes on products exported to the U.S.

Unfair U.S. Tariffs: Duties on Alberta’s lumber have jumped from 14% to nearly 30%

Impact on Consumers: Lumber duties drive up home prices in both Canada and the U.S.

Alberta & U.S. Trade Ties: Alberta’s forest industry supports thousands of American jobs, including in pulp, packaging, and wood panels.

We need strong advocacy to push for fair trade.

SOLUTIONS FOR A STRONGER FOREST SECTOR

1. Advocate for Fair Trade Policies

  • Work with federal and provincial governments to push back against unfair U.S. tariffs.
  • Highlight how Alberta forestry products are essential to both economies.

2. Keep Alberta’s Regulatory Costs Low

  • Competitive timber dues and streamlined permitting will help Alberta mills thrive.

3. Build with Alberta Wood

  • Increase domestic demand with a “Build with Alberta Wood” initiative, like BC and Quebec have done.
  • Encourage mass timber construction to create new markets.

4. Secure Federal Financial Assistance

  • Advocate for a return of $10 billion in duties held by the U.S. Treasury.
  • Push for federal financial support for struggling mills.

5. Diversify Our Markets

  • Expand exports to India, China, Japan, and the Philippines.
  • Support trade missions and international partnerships.

6. Implement a Forestry Manufacturing Tax Credit

  • Encourage investment in bioenergy, engineered wood, and innovative forestry solutions.
