The Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) welcomes Prime Minister Carney’s announcement of new supports for the forest industry, including measures to encourage domestic use of Canadian forest products and convene a roundtable to examine sector competitiveness.
“This is good news. It shows that the Government of Canada understands the impact of unfair trade barriers being imposed on Canada’s forest industry and has been hearing our calls to focus on competitiveness and reduce regulatory burden.”
– Jason Krips, President and CEO of the AFPA
AFPA has been advocating for supports that reach businesses immediately and flow through the supply chain to small and large lumber producers, pulp, panel, and secondary manufacturers.
The forest industry supports over 30,000 jobs in Alberta. These jobs provide stable incomes and economic benefits that flow through communities.
The reality of the situation is that Canada needs to reach a deal on lumber with the United States. The current uncertainty is making homes unaffordable for Americans and impacting people on both sides of the border who work in transportation, retailing, and building with Canadian lumber. Alberta’s forest industry urges the Government of Canada to continue telling this story and working towards a resolution with our American partners.
