OPINION: Forests Are About More Than Trees

Alberta Forest Week is here – one of those natural moments throughout the year where I take time to pause and reflect on the challenges behind us, the opportunities that lie ahead, and all of the people who make that work possible.

This year, I find myself thinking about what it truly means to be part of a forest community.

Because at its core, this sector isn’t just about trees — it’s about people. The ones who show up early, stay late, and take pride in work that often goes unseen. The ones who build their lives around the forests, who care deeply about the land, and who understand that what they do today matters for generations to come.

If there’s one word that defines these communities, it’s resilience.

Much like our forests themselves — shaped by disturbance, renewed through fire, and strengthened over time — forest communities carry that same spirit. When challenges arise, we face them head-on, ready to come out the other side with new perspectives, positioned for growth, and committed to building better, together.

And there is no question that we’ve faced real challenges in recent years.

The wildfires we’ve experienced have been felt deeply across the province – with families displaced, communities evacuated, and many now working to rebuild. In moments like these, the resilience of our communities is most visible.

And as trade pressures mount, it’s those very same communities who will continue to navigate that uncertainty with resilience and determination.

That’s what gives me confidence in the future of Alberta’s forest sector. Not just the resource itself, but the individuals and communities who steward it — driving innovation, supporting local economies, and helping position forestry as a key part of the solution to some of our biggest challenges.

So, however you choose to celebrate Alberta Forest Week — whether it’s a walk in the woods, taking a closer look at the products we rely on every day, or simply learning something new — please take a moment to recognize the people behind it all.

This week, we’re sending a small token of appreciation (celebratory cookies) to forestry workers across the province as a reminder that their work is valued.

Because behind every healthy forest and every forest product we rely on, there are people who make it possible — and that’s worth celebrating.

About the Alberta Forest Products Association

The Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) is a non-profit association that has represented the sustainable forest industry in Alberta since 1942. We foster success and innovation in the forest sector by providing a broad range of resources, guidance, and training for member companies, and we’re also responsible for increasing public understanding of our forest resource and how the forest industry maintains it.

We’re closely engaged with our members, the community at large, and other forest stakeholders, including governments, representatives from other industries in Alberta, such as teachers, students, and NGOs. Our goal is to make this industry the best it can be, and to fulfill that responsibility with transparency, integrity, and accountability.
