New federal funding supports market access, workforce resilience, and greater use of Canadian wood.

Edmonton, AB The Alberta Softwood Trade Council (ASLTC) welcomes today’s announcement by Prime Minister Carney, which includes measures to support forest sector workers, develop new markets, liquidity for small and medium-sized businesses, and a strong commitment to procuring Canadian wood products in new construction.

While it remains critically important for the Government of Canada to negotiate a new Softwood Lumber Agreement with the United States, today’s announcement will help industry at a critical time.  Most Canadian Lumber exporters to the United States face duties of nearly 35% and much of what Alberta’s forest companies produce is destined for the US market.

“This is an important step forward,” said Jason Krips, co-chair of the Alberta Softwood Lumber Trade Council. “We’re encouraged to see the federal government recognize the importance of Canada’s forest sector — especially at a time when workers, communities, and companies are navigating so much uncertainty. Investments that open markets, support the workforce, and prioritize homegrown and sustainable wood products all help build long-term sector resilience. Domestic policy that supports our forestry workers is always welcome.”

Today’s announcement includes:

  • Up to $700 million in loan guarantees to address the immediate pressures facing the softwood lumber sector.
  • Investment of $500 million to supercharge product and market diversification to make the industry more competitive for the long-term.
  • A firm commitment to build Canadian by prioritizing Canadian materials in construction and changing federal procurement processes to require companies contracting with the federal government to source Canadian lumber.
  • Reinvigorating efforts to diversify international markets for Canada’s sustainably sourced forest products.
  • $50 million for upskilling, reskilling, and income supports for more than 6,000 affected softwood lumber workers through the Labour Market Development Agreements.

About the ASLTC
The Alberta Softwood Lumber Trade Council represents softwood lumber manufacturers in Alberta. Alberta’s forest sector contributes over $14 billion in economic impact, supports over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs, and is the economic driver for over 70 communities across the province. Forestry is also one of Alberta’s most important climate tools — playing a key role in wildfire mitigation, creating products that store carbon, and growing new forests for future generations to enjoy.
